Kokořínsko is one of the classic biker regions. Not because of speed, but because of atmosphere. Narrow roads squeezed between sandstone cliffs, deep forests, medieval castles, and villages where time seems to have stopped. It’s an ideal one-day ride, best enjoyed at a relaxed pace with your visor up.
Start in Mělník: the gateway to the Kokořín Valley
Start your loop in Mělník and head toward Lhotka. This is where you first feel the true character of the region. In Lhotka, make sure to stop at the rock dwellings carved directly into the sandstone. The last resident lived here until 1982, which gives the place a powerful sense of authenticity.
Harasov and Kokořín: the heart of the region
From Lhotka, continue to Harasov. The small pond surrounded by rock walls is one of the most photogenic spots on the route. From here it’s just a short ride to Kokořín Castle, rising from a rocky spur above the valley.
Houska and Bezděz: castles with a story
From Kokořín, head toward Houska Castle. According to legend, it was built over a gateway to hell. You may not meet any demons, but the atmosphere is unmistakable. The route then continues to Bezděz Castle, the dominant landmark of the Mácha region, standing above the landscape like a stone lighthouse. Even riding beneath it is an experience in itself.
Mácha Lake: a coffee break
Take road no. 38 toward Mácha Lake, an ideal place for a short break. Coffee, a light bite, or simply taking off your helmet and switching off for a moment.
Return via Jestřebí and the Devil’s Heads
The way back leads past the rock castle of Jestřebí and on through Dubá. Near the village of Želízy, just off the road, you’ll find the monumental rock sculptures known as the Devil’s Heads, created by sculptor Václav Levý. A brief stop here is the perfect way to round off the ride before returning to Mělník. If you have extra time, the local ossuary, one of the largest in the country is also worth a visit.
